This verse is part of the model prayer. Jesus used the model prayer to teach us how to pray. He begins by teaching us to give thanks and glory to God for everything he has done in our lives. Then he moves on to teaching us to open ourselves up to doing God’s will and for establishing his kingdom here on earth. We then come to today’s verse, which means far more than asking for our daily nutritional needs. When Jesus said to ask give us our daily bread he was and is telling us to ask God daily to show us his will for our life as we spend time daily in his word. Remember yesterday’s verse which said, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4 NIV). Remember your daily bread is not just what will sustain you physically, but more importantly it is what will sustain you spiritually. Just as your body needs daily nutrition so your soul needs daily spiritual nutrition. Spend time in God’s word on a daily basis and ask him to reveal the things that will help you grow on spiritual basis daily.
