Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.-Psalm 119:105
The Bible is your instruction book, your guide book and your manual for life. If you want to know God and the direction that he has for your life, then you have to spend time reading his word. But you have to do more than read his word you have to meditate on his word daily. The word mediate in this context simply means to think deeply on and reflect on what the word of God means for your life. In this same Psalm the Psalmist writes these words, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11 NIV). The key to making God’s word the lamp for your feet and the light for your path is to hide God’s word in your heart. You have to know God’s word and not just with a head knowledge (i.e. being a Biblical scholar) but you must have heart knowledge of God’s word. To have heart knowledge simply means that the words of the Bible are more than just words to you that you read and then don’t apply, but instead the words of the Bible are what guide and direct you in your life and the Bible is the first place you go with questions about the rightness or wrongness of something. Paul tells Timothy this in his second letter to him, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be throughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV). You have all the information you need to live the life that God has called you to live, you just have to access it. Make spending time in God’s word daily a priority in you life and you will be surprised by the difference it will make.
