I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”-Psalm 91:2
The author of this Psalm is unknown, but his message is crystal clear. God is the one we should be placing our faith and trust in. He says that God is our refuge. What is a refuge and why is God our refuge? A refuge is a place you can go to where you not only find safety and security, but where you find rest and healing. God fulfills all of these. He provides you with safety, security, rest and healing. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(Matthew 11:28-30 NIV). He, also, says that God is our fortress. We all know what a fortress is and the purpose that fortresses serve. Fortresses serve as a defensive measure against your enemies. God as our fortress is not something we can run and hide behind thinking that we will never have to do battle with our enemies, but rather our fortress is a place where we can fight our enemies with protection. Paul in his letter to the Ephesian church describes in this way: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”(Ephesians 6:10-13 NIV). We are not engaged in battle with our fellow human beings, rather we are engaged in battle with the devil and his minions. And you cannot win this battle by yourself. You have to a refuge where you can go to be healed and be safe. You have to have the protection that only God can offer you. Place your trust in the God offers you a place of healing and safety, and offers you the protection you need to go out and make your stand against the devil and his schemes.
