John here is echoing some of the very last words that Jesus spoke to his disciples before he was crucified. Jesus’ actual words were these: “I have told you these things so that you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart I have overcome the world” (John 16:33 NIV). When you are going through the tough times in your life and it seems that everything against you remember, that if you have put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ then you have put your faith and trust in the one who has overcome the world. Paul in Romans 8:31 asked this question: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” The answer to that question is no one. You serve a God who is greater than you problems, greater than your fears and who is greater than anything that the world can throw against you. Paul concludes Romans 8 with these well known verses. “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:37-39 NIV). God has given you the power to overcome the world through his Holy Spirit.
