Alive: 47 Days of Lent, Day 37

Alive: Peace

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7 NIV

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

John 14:27 NIV

Violence and hate plague our planet, unsettling our souls. How can Christians be equipped for peacebuilding? I found vital answers in Paul’s letter to the Philippians, when he deals with two symptoms of lacking peace: disunity and anxiety.

Peace is sourced in God through prayer: “in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

Peace of God surpasses comprehension: “peace is better than all understanding.”

Peace of God shields heart and mind: “the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Peace is sustained by Jesus Christ: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

Father God,

Today may you seek and find peace in your fellowship with God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. May God’s outrageous peace keep your heart and mind secure, and soak your relationships with fellow humans and the whole of creation. Amen.
