Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.-Colossians 4:6
Why are we told to be the “salt and the light” by Jesus and told by Paul here that our conversations need to be seasoned with salt? Salt is best known for being a substance used for persevering food. However, salt has other uses that are more important in this context. When you put salt on an open wound it stings. Salt does this because it acting almost like a natural disinfectant. Because salt is so abrasive when it is mixed with water it removes things that just pure water cannot. What Paul is saying here is that you need to be ready and prepared to be that cleansing agent. But just as pure undiluted salt can cause a great deal harm so can you when you choose to not dilute your words and your actions with grace.
