A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.-John 13:34-35
How will people know that you are a follower of Jesus? Is it by your words or is it by your actions? Jesus settles this argument once and for all in today’s verses. He says that everyone will know that you are his disciple or follower by the love that you show to others. The love that Jesus is talking about is not romantic love, nor is it an emotional love that is tied up in the way that you feel about others. Instead, it is a love that involves not just your emotions or your feelings about someone else, it includes your ability to decide and to choose how you will act. Your emotions are very reactionary and they involve very little thought. So love based your emotions, also, involves very little thought. Where as the love that Jesus has called us to show others, and the love that he shows towards us, involves a great deal of thought. In order to truly love one another, as Jesus has called us to, we must consciously make a choice to so and this involves the rational thinking part of our brain and not the emotional part of our brain. Do not misunderstand what I am saying here, your emotions or feelings about a certain situation are going to play a part in your thought process, but they never should be the sole reason for your decision. The choice you have today is to continue to let your emotions or feelings dictate how you will respond to others, or you can choose to not let your emotions or feelings rule your life and react in a way that will truly show the world of the change that has happened inside of you through the love of Jesus.
