But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.-Isaiah 53:5

This verse comes from a section of the book Isaiah that everyone is familiar with. It is the section that deals with the suffering servant and through it Isaiah gave the people of Israel an accurate description of what the Messiah or the Chosen One or the Anointed One would be like during his time on earth, years before the events he is describing take place. The description of the coming Messiah is not one of a conquering king, but as a man of great suffering who would take on the weight of the sins of his people. The only person has ever fit every description within this passage is Jesus. He is the one who was pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities or our sins. He is the one who took on the punishment we deserved for our sins and through his death, burial and resurrection he made a way for us to be healed and forgiven from all our sins.
