Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.-Colossians 4:2
Paul’s instructions to the Colossian church are as important today as they were when he gave them to the Colossians. He tells them to devote themselves to prayer. What this means that God’s people, those who have chosen to actively follow Jesus, are to be actively seeking to spend time with him on a daily basis. Not as a way get God off your back or to check off a box on your to do list, but as a means of learning about God and learning from God. Next Paul tells us to be watchful. As followers of Christ we are always be on our guard. Why? Because the devil knows he can’t steal you away from God, if you have been truly saved, but the devil can steer you off the right path for your life through traps and snares that he will layout. And the only way to avoid these traps and snares is to be watchful. Lastly Paul tells us we are to be thankful. What Paul is telling us here is that we are to have an attitude of gratitude. As followers of Christ we are not to live our life’s constantly grumbling and complaining about things. As followers of Christ we have so much to be thankful for. When we start to fill ungrateful we should remember the most important reason we as followers of Christ have to be grateful, and that is the one and only, perfect son of God died and rose again to take away your sins and mine. That alone should give all the reason in the world to be thankful. So choose today to devote yourself to pray, being watchful and thankful.
