Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.-Matthew 6:34

These words are Jesus’ conclusion on his teaching about worrying. Worry is something that we all struggle with and it is something that if taken to the extreme can be detrimental to our health. In fact this one Jesus’ main arguments for not worrying. He begins his teaching on this subject with these words: “Therefore I tell you do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not no sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable then they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”(Matthew 6:25-27 NIV). Jesus is basically tells us here that animals don’t worry about what is going to happen in the future and yet they some how manage to survive. And then he asks the most important question of all what good does worrying do for you. And the answer is very simple. Worrying does you no good. It takes your mind off the present, where we are suppose to live, and puts your mind on the future, which is something that we ultimately have very little control over.

In verses 28-31 Jesus continues his comparison of our worrying to the lack of worry found in nature. And then finally he gets to the heart of the matter in verses 32 and 33. He tells us in these verses: “For the pagans run after all these things, and your Heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”(Matthew 6:32-33 NIV). Here Jesus tells us that world goes and chases after food, clothing, money and all the things that they think give them status and more importantly that they think give them happiness. But Jesus tells us that as followers of him we are not to be like the rest of the world. We are not to put our focus and our worry on the things that the world says are important. Rather we are to be about God’s kingdom and God’s business. And when you put your focus on you will quit worrying about the little things in life, because you will find that God has a way of taking care of those who go about his business. Remember the key to not worrying is to put your focus on God.
