I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God. I will save your from all your uncleanness.-Ezekiel 36:25-29
In the midst of all strange visions that Ezekiel sees and records God does give him one very clear message. And that message is that God wants to change the hearts of people. The New Living Translation puts verse 26 in this way: “And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.” Your old heart and your old spirit, aka your old way of life, was one that was full of impurities. And the only way for those impurities to be gotten rid of is for them to be replaced with something else. That something is the new heart and new spirit that God gives you when you accept the free gift of salvation that he is offering you. That is the only way for you to rid yourself of the things that make you impure in the sight of God. This change happens because God sends his spirit to live within you. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit living with followers of Jesus that we are able to follow God’s decrees.
