There are a couple of things that are of great importance in this passage. The first one is that God does not say here that bad things will not happen to you throughout your life. And why is that so vastly important for us to understand? Do we not think that because we are followers of God that only good things will ever happen to us? We ignore the fact that our enemy the devil wants to create as much chaos and havoc in our life as possible in order to get us to away from God or to question God’s goodness. Which leads us into the second and last important thing that we see in this passage, and that is God promises that he will always be with you. If you notice ever calamity that God mentions in this passage is followed by phrase stating that no harm would come to you. The key to understanding God’s message in this passage is to understand that yes bad things are going to happen to you, but you need to remember that God is always right there with you. If we remember this, then we like David can say things like this, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and you staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4 NIV). Remember this will also allow us to say thing about whatever our circumstance in life that the Apostle Paul said in his letter to the Philippians. “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:11-13 NIV) God is the one who will enable you to pass through the rivers without being swept away. God is the one who will enable to walk through the fire without being burned. Put your trust in God today and learn the secret to being content.
