I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.-John 16:33
What are the things that Jesus told his disciples and us that will give us peace? Jesus is referencing everything he had told his disciples and us starting in John 14 and ending in John 16. This two chapter section is Jesus’ last opportunity to teach and impart knowledge and wisdom before his death. Jesus was essentially preparing his disciples over John 14-16 to take the reigns of his ministry and pick up where he had left off. And he tells them that they will be able to do this because of a gift that he is going to leave for them. And that gift is the Holy Spirit. And we today receive that same gift when we accept Jesus Christ as our personal lord and savior.
It is through the gift of the Holy Spirit that we able to have the peace that Jesus is talking about in today’s verse. The peace Jesus gives through the gift of the Holy Spirit is not peace from conflict or war, but rather it is the absence of fear and dread about the future and more specifically death. You see the world fears the future and they fear death, because deep in their hearts they know how the story ends and they want to whatever they can prevent that ending from coming. They know that the temporary ruler of this world the devil has been defeated and that one day Jesus is going to come back and establish his earthly kingdom and that on that day they have to acknowledge that Jesus is Lord, not by choice but by force. That is why we as followers of Jesus are to take heart. Because we are on the side that will the war in the end, even though it may appear at times that we are losing the war. That is why the last words of teaching that Jesus spoke to his disciples and us were these.
I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.-John 16:33 NIV
