The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.-Proverbs 1:7

What does Solomon mean when writes “the fear of Lord”? Does he mean that we are to be scared of or frightened by God? Or does he mean that we are to stand in awe of God’s great power and of his great love? Clearly we are not to be scared of or frightened by God, but rather we are to stand in awe of his great power and of his great love. It is this awe or great wonder at how powerful and loving God is that will lead us to want to learn all we can about him. For it is those things awe us the most that we seek to learn more about. And the more we get to know God the more awestruck we become of him and the more we want to learn about him. God wants us to know all about him, but we have to willing to learn and to listen. So let “the fear of the Lord” by the beginning of your knowledge and don’t “despise wisdom and instruction”.
