And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you – you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” Or “What shall we wear?” For the pagans run after all these things, and your Heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:28-34
Jesus here gives us a clear picture of what our priorities as followers of God ought to be. And our number one priority is be building God’s kingdom and not our own kingdom. For when we are focused on building God’s kingdom we are focused on doing God’s will. And when we are focused on doing God’s will all the things that we once worried about and lost sleep over suddenly seem to be less of a big deal. Why? Because by focusing on God’s will and building his kingdom you are relying on God and not on yourself or others. For you see when we start to rely on ourselves or others we start to look to the future and we begin to worry about what is going to happen tomorrow, not that is always a bad thing. God does not want you to be so focused on tomorrow that you lose sight of today. Make your plans for the future, but don’t get upset if they don’t turn out the way you want them to, because God may have a different plan for you and he is waiting for you to “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness”.
