Verse of the Day 10-28-21

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live. Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” John 11:25-26

To put these two verse into context we have to understand the events that led up to them. About two days prior to Jesus quoting these famous words, he is told that his good friend Lazarus is sick. And not just regular sick, but sick to the point of death. In fact we are told in John 11:17 that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days, which means that he died shortly after Jesus received the message that he was sick. Which means that these words were spoken to Martha, who was one of Lazarus’ sisters, to provide her with both comfort and hope. For you see Jesus intended all along to raise Lazarus from the dead, but he also used it as a teaching moment to show Mary, Martha, and us that physical death is not something we should fear.

But how can we not fear physical death? And what does Jesus mean when he says “The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live. Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” Is Jesus telling us that we will never face physical death and live forever? Of course not. But what then is he telling us? He is telling us that when we place our faith and trust in him, that even though our physical bodies will die our souls will live forever in the presence of God. For you see physical death is just the end of life here on this earth, but it is not the end for your soul. Because your soul is that which makes you who are. And your soul will go to one of two places when your physical body dies. It will either go to Hell where it will spend eternity separated from God, or it will go to Heaven where it will spend eternity with God. But the most import thing that you need to get out of all of this is that you choose where you will spend eternity. The question then becomes do you believe this? And you can respond in one of two ways. You can either reject the truth in this life and spend eternity separated from God or you can accept the truth and put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ and spend eternity with God. The choice is yours, but choose wisely.

Success! You're on the list.
