So don’t worry saying, “What will we eat?” or “What will we drink?” or “What will we wear?” For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things and your Heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:31-34
What is Jesus teaching us here? Is he telling us not to plan? NO he is not telling us not to plan, but what he is telling us to not be so focused on the future that we lose site of what is happening in the here and now. That is what Jesus meant when he said: “So don’t worry saying, “What will we eat?” or “What will we drink?” or “What will we wear?” For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things and your Heavenly Father knows that you need them”. When Jesus used the word “Gentiles” here he was not just referring to those who were not Jewish, but he was also and primarily referring to those who do not believe in and put their trust in God. Because the very next phrase says this: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you”. Jesus is telling us that if we put our faith and trust in God and our diligently looking to do his will, then God will provide for our needs. But the key here is our needs and not want our wants. Because a need is something that you have to have in order to live, but a want is something that you don’t have to have but you would really like to have. Because when we start to pursue our wants we start putting material possessions and earthly desires ahead of God, which means that we have stopped seeking first his kingdom and have instead started seeking first our kingdom. Remember, today to put God’s kingdom first and your kingdom second.
