Verse of the Day 11-10-21

For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

The conjunction “for” connects this verse (12) directly to verse 11. Which says this, “Let us then make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall into the same pattern of disobedience.” We enter into God’s rest by submitting to the complete examination and deep spiritual surgery that comes from exposure to God’s Word. God’s Word is anything that God speaks. It is the expression of the character, desires and purposes of God himself. We have God’s Word conveyed to us in written form through the Bible. This Word, throughout both the Old Testament and New Testament, dynamic, active and ultimately effective accomplishing God’s purposes. It is like a sharp sword that cuts into our innermost being in order to discern whether our thoughts and motives are worthy or unworthy, spiritual or unspiritual. Like a surgeon’s scalpel, it cuts away the spiritual corruption from our lives and brings healing and life to those who submit to the Word in faith. Yet, like a warrior’s sword, God’s Word brings judgment and destruction on those who openly turn from and defy it.

To help you further understand what all of that means we are going to turn to what the Baptist Faith and Message has to say about the Bible once again.

The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is God’s revelation of Himself to man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter. Therefore, all Scripture is totally true and trustworthy. It reveals the principles by which God judges us, and therefore is, and will remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried. All Scripture is a testimony to Christ, who is Himself the focus of divine revelation.

If we go back to todays passage it begins by saying “For the Word of God is living and effective”. The writer of Hebrews is telling us the exact same thing that the Baptist Faith and Message is telling us. The Baptist Faith and Message starts off by saying this about the Bible: “The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is God’s revelation of Himself to man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction.” Because the Bible is the very Word of God it reveals God to us, but it does not reveal God in the same way to everyone. Which is why the Bible is both living and effective.

The last phrase of the first sentence of verse 12 and the last sentence go hand in hand. They say, “And sharper than any doubled-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart”. Again to understand this better we are going to turn the Baptist Faith and Message which says this: “It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without mixture of error, for its matter. Therefore, all Scripture is totally true and trustworthy. It reveals the principles by which God judges us, and therefore is, and will remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried. All Scripture is a testimony to Christ, who is Himself the focus of divine revelation.” The writer of Hebrews and the Baptist Faith and Message are telling us the exact same thing. They are telling us that the Bible does spiritual surgery on your heart. It is through reading and meditating on the Bible that God reveals the areas of your life that need to be changed or in surgical terms cut out. But these areas cannot be cut out through your own power nor can they be revealed through your own power. Rather it is through the power of the Holy Spirit, who is your Counselor and your Advocate. Because the whole point of the Bible is to reveal Christ to you. That is why the Bible is able to “judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart”. Because God knows what you need and reveals what you need through His Word, but you have to be open to and intentional about hearing what God is trying to reveal to through His Word and the power of the Holy Spirit.
