I hate, I despise your religious festivals;
your assemblies are a stench to me.
Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings,
I will not accept them.
Though you bring choice fellowship offerings,
I will have no regard for them.
Away with the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.
But let justice roll on like a river,
righteousness like a never-failing stream! Amos 5:21-24
Here God is speaking in vivid terms of his disregard for all the aspects of Israelite religion that presumably was directed towards him. When all that would please God would be an abundance of justice. But how does this apply to us today?
The answer is very simple. No amount of religious activity is going to make up for our sinful lifestyle. We may fool others leading them to believe that we are all right because we go to church three times a week or give 20 percent of our income to the church. But God will not look favorably upon our religious behavior if our hearts are not right with him.
