Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:2-3
“The unity of the Spirit” cannot be created by any human being or group of believers. As Paul has already emphasized in Chapters 1-3, this unity already exists for those who have accepted the truth and received Christ. The Ephesians are now to maintain that unity, not through human efforts or organizations, but by living “a life worthy of the calling they have received” (v. 1). Spiritual unity is not a matter of intellectual agreement on all issues. It is a unity of love and purpose and is maintained by being loyal to the truth and moving in obedience to the leading of the Spirit. This unity is based on Christ’s love and purpose at work in and through our lives. It cannot be achieved “by human effort”. It will, however, express itself outwardly in good works.
