But let justice roll on like a river,
righteousness like a never-failing stream! Amos 5:24
Dr. Tony Evans wrote this about today’s passage in his study Bible notes:
God hated the religious practices of Israel and refused to accept them. Why? Because justice was absent from Israelite society. This a reminder that you can’t worship God on Sunday and despise your neighbor on Monday. You can’t read your Bible in private and then oppress your brother in public. Martin Luther King Jr. underscored the connection between having faith in God and doing works of righteous when he quoted Amos 5:24 in his “I Have a Dream” speech.
What Dr. Evan is saying here is that we must careful never to be doing so much for God that we miss God in the process.
