Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 1 John 2:15-16
Things in the world are not just material objects. They are things that absorb human love of the Father to undue degree, even to the point of supplanting God. John warned against what the body desires, what the eyes itch to see, and what people work hard to acquire. These are not from the Father but from the world. We must remember that all sin can be broken down into those things we desire for our bodies that are not good for us, those things that we have a desire to see but again are not good for us, and lastly those things that we deeply desire to achieve in our lives that again are not good for us.
