Verse of the Day 3-31-22

I waited patiently for the LORD;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the LORD
and put their trust in him. Psalm 40:1-3

The question that should come to mind in today’s verse is what kind of pit was David in?

And based David’s graphic description of this pit he was probably reminding his readers of pits that were and still sometimes are dug for water. Or “the pit” could mean a dungeon, a trap or it could be used as a metaphor for death itself. Because some graves were dug in the sides of a deep hole. However, no matter which image comes to mind, the symbolism is clear: God rescued him out of a desperate, hopeless situation.
