Through the Bible in One Year

Day 92

Luke 9:46-48

Now an argument started among them as to which of them might be the greatest. But Jesus, knowing what they were thinking in their hearts, took a child and had him stand by His side, and He said to them, “Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.” (NASB)

In today’s passage we see the disciples arguing among themselves over who is the greatest.  And Jesus responds to this argument in this way, “Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great,” which begs the question what does “receiving” or “welcoming” a child have to do with spiritual greatness?

Human nature generally ignores those who have no influence and plays up to those who do.  Human nature rubs shoulders with the great in order to boost one’s own ego and status in the eyes of others.  Jesus calls for us to humble ourselves.  We should care nothing about the world’s status symbols because the true way to greatness is humility and one sign of this humility is to enjoy those the world would consider insignificant.
