Day 113
Luke 21:34-36
“Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap. For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”
Today’s passage is the end of Jesus’ prophetic message spoken to his followers before his death. He ends this prophetic message by warning believers not to be so preoccupied with the cares and pleasures of the world that they fail to prepare for his coming. Jesus’ words are meant for all God’s people of all times, not just those living during the final days of tribulation.
The demand for spiritual faithfulness is most important as we live with the reality of Jesus’ teaching that he will first return for his faithful followers at an unexpected time. Since the time of his coming for the church cannot be determined believers must always be ready. And it is this coming at an unknown time that “rescues us from the coming wrath” (1 Th. 1:10), so that we “may be able to escape all that is about to happen” on earth.
