Verse of the Day 4-25-22

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” John 14:5-7

To give a little background to what is happening in this passage we need to back up to John 14:1-4 which says,

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus’ statement that they knew the way perplexed Thomas. Jesus responded to Thomas’s question with his sixth “I am” statement: Jesus claimed to be the way, the truth and the life. His words strike a note of exclusivity. Jesus is the only way to the Father, and no one can know God expect through him. In fact, it is for this reason that the early church was called the Way.

Jesus is the only way to God because ultimate truth resides in him. Jesus taught the truth, lived the truth and revealed the one true God. Furthermore, Jesus is the life. Life has been associated with Jesus throughout the Gospel. And to truly know Jesus is to have eternal life, and finally to know Jesus is to know God the Father.
