Verse of the Day 4-30-22

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.
They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens
and makes its circuit to the other;
nothing is deprived of its warmth. Psalm 19:1-6

David here marvels at how God reveals himself through his world and his word. Verse 1-6 depict the created world as communicating constantly. This never-ending revelation reaches everyone. Psalm 19:1 evokes the creation account. God’s glory is on permanent display in the skies. Since the creation of the world the skies have been telling humanity about God every day without fail. They use no human language, yet the whole earth hears and understands. The apostle Paul argues that human beings are accountable to God because creation plainly declares his glory (Romans 1:19-20). Later Paul quotes Psalm 19:4 to emphasize that the Jews were exposed to the gospel just as the inhabitants of earth are exposed to the skies.

Continuing the thought at the end of verse 4, David gives a specific example of how creation communicates. He describes the sun’s arc across the sky using two metaphors: a groom exiting his chambers to begin the wedding processional and an athlete exploding off the starting line. The sun’s trajectory covers the whole earth, so no person can claim they have not experienced its heat. Everyone experiences this revelation.
