In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. Romans 8:26-27
Today’s verses are a further application of the assurance that the Spirit who indwells us helps us to pray. The one who searches our hearts (v. 27) is probably the Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:10), though it could be the Father or the Son (Revelation 2:23). But the main point is clear: the Spirit enables us to pray because, knowing God’s will, he can help us pray in accordance with God’s will.
