For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying —and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles. 1 Timothy 2:5-7
Not only is there is one God, there is also only one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who sacrificed his life as a ransom for all. Thus Paul follows an inclusive statement (God wants all to be saved, found verse 4) with an exclusive one (only one mediator). “Mediator” means Jesus stood in the gap between God and humanity and paid the ransom or price required for our salvation. By dying on the cross, the righteous for the unrighteous, and by paying the penalty for their sin, Jesus made it possible for sinners to be reconciled to God. This is Paul’s message in his role as a herald and apostle. As an apostle, he was sent by God to preach the Good News of forgiveness and salvation in Jesus Christ; as a herald, he went about everywhere making initial proclamation that Jesus saves, akin to a town crier who announces important news to all who care to hear it.
