Verse of the Day 6-4-22

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. Galatians 5:13-15

Paul here distinguishes between freedom to sin and freedom to serve. Freedom or license to sin is no freedom at all, because it enslaves you to Satan, others and/or your own sinful nature. Christians by contrast should not be slaves to sin, because they are free to do right and to glorify God through loving service to others.

Paul finishes his thoughts on our freedom in Christ by tells us that when we as believers lose the motivation of love, we become critical of others. In other words, what we do is we stop looking for good in them and we start seeing only their faults. And the ultimate result of this is that we will sooner rather than later lose our unity. And now for the hard part of all this: How do we apply this to our lives? And in order to apply what Paul is teaching us here to our lives we must each ask ourselves these deep and probing questions.

  • Have you talked behind someone’s back?
  • Have you focused on others’ shortcomings instead of their strengths?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, and if you are being really truthful with yourself then your answer to both of these questions, then here is what you need to do: Remind yourself of Jesus’ command to love others as you love yourself (Matthew 22:39). And the best way to do that is to find a way to remember that person or persons positive qualities. And the quickest and easiest way to do that is make a list of that person or persons positive qualities, when you begin to feel critical of anyone. Finally, we must remember this: When problems need to be addressed, confront in love rather than gossip.
