They return at evening,
snarling like dogs,
and prowl about the city.
They wander about for food
and howl if not satisfied.
But I will sing of your strength,
in the morning I will sing of your love;
for you are my fortress,
my refuge in times of trouble.
You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
you, God, are my fortress,
my God on whom I can rely. Psalm 59:14-17
Now that the slanderers have been silenced, they have satisfaction. As a pack of dogs, the return again to the city and howl because their food does not satisfy. God often disciples people by making their sinful choices unsatisfying. David’s soul, on the other hand, is richly satisfied. The dogs were scavenging in the evening, but David greets the dawn with song, reflecting on God’s unbending strength and covenant love that keeps him safe in tumultuous times. Just as the prowling dogs appear twice in the psalm, David’s confident refrain appears twice (vv. 6, 14 and vv. 9, 17). But David has moved from watchman to worshiper. While previously he watched God (v.9), now he sings praise to God (v.17). He has shifted from waiting and hoping to praising and singing (vv.9, 17).
