Verse of the Day 7-9-22

Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the duty of all mankind. Ecclesiastes 12:13

The entire book of Ecclesiastes must be interpreted and understood in light of this concluding verse. Solomon began with a very negative evaluation of life as meaningless, but he ends with serious counsel and wise advice about where meaning can be found. By continuing to embrace a holy and deep sense of wonder, respect and honor for God-his mercy and his judgement-we will be stronger at avoiding evil and doing what is right. The standard of God’s Word will be our guide. This will also help us to find and fulfill our highest purpose in life. We will come to know that satisfaction cannot be found in any other way. The “whole duty of man” literally translates as “the wholeness of humankind.” This concluding advice is a direct contrast to the empty, meaningless tone set at the beginning of the book. That is to say, for us to be whole and fulfilled, our lives must be centered around honoring God and following his plans. A right relationship to God and his Word brings wholeness and satisfaction that makes life worthwhile.
