The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9
The reason for the Lord’s seeming delay in returning for his people is his great patience and compassion. This relates directly to the mission Christ gave his followers to take his message into all the world and teach others to follow him. When this mission is complete, the end will come. God wants everyone to hear the life-saving message of Christ and does not want anyone to be spiritually lost and eternally condemned to separation from God. This truth does not mean that all will be saved because if a person rejects God’s gracious invitation of forgiveness and eternal life with him, then he or she remains spiritually lost.
