Verse of the Day 7-25-22

In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:
We have a strong city;
God makes salvation
its walls and ramparts.
Open the gates
that the righteous nation may enter,
the nation that keeps faith.
You will keep in perfect peace
those whose minds are steadfast,
because they trust in you.
Trust in the LORD forever,
for the LORD, the LORD himself, is the Rock eternal.
He humbles those who dwell on high,
he lays the lofty city low;
he levels it to the ground
and casts it down to the dust.
Feet trample it down—
the feet of the oppressed,
the footsteps of the poor. Isaiah 26:1-6

Writing of the future day when God’s people will experience the fullness of salvation, Isaiah tells of the song that will be sung in the promised land. The old Jerusalem will be a city made new again. The city will be strong, and salvation will be its walls and ramparts (v. 1). Just as walls were used to protect citizens of a city, so also will God protect his people. The gates will be for the righteous, and the minds of the righteous will be in perfect peace (vv. 2-3). We should trust the Lord now, for he is the Rock who is sturdy and stable in the ebb and flow of life and suffering. Yahweh is the firm foundation for his people. In contrast, the proud will face demise and be leveled to the dust by God’s hand. Those who were oppressed by the proud will now trample their enemies.
