“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. Matthew 5:43-45
God’s hatred of evil is a central theme in the Old Testament. Because God hates evil, those who embody evil are understood to be God’s enemies, and it is natural to hate God’s enemies. However, though God hates evil, he also loves every one of his creatures and intends to bring reconciliation to all. Those who respond to God’s will in the ministry of Jesus are children of the heavenly Father. With the sun and rain, God shows grace and care for all his creatures, so his disciples are to love both neighbor and enemy.
