Verse of the Day 8-14-22

Listen to your father, who gave you life,
and do not despise your mother when she is old.
Buy the truth and do not sell it—
wisdom, instruction and insight as well.
The father of a righteous child has great joy;
a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him.
May your father and mother rejoice;
may she who gave you birth be joyful!
My son, give me your heart
and let your eyes delight in my ways,
for an adulterous woman is a deep pit,
and a wayward wife is a narrow well.
Like a bandit she lies in wait
and multiplies the unfaithful among men.
Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has strife? Who has complaints?
Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
Those who linger over wine,
who go to sample bowls of mixed wine.
Do not gaze at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup,
when it goes down smoothly!
In the end it bites like a snake
and poisons like a viper.
Your eyes will see strange sights,
and your mind will imagine confusing things.
You will be like one sleeping on the high seas,
lying on top of the rigging.
“They hit me,” you will say, “but I’m not hurt!
They beat me, but I don’t feel it!
When will I wake up
so I can find another drink?”
Do not envy the wicked,
do not desire their company;
for their hearts plot violence,
and their lips talk about making trouble. Proverbs 23:22-24:2

Foolishness, specifically as it pertains to sexual sin, is a hunter tracking people down to steal their life. The adulterous woman stalks her victim like a robber who hides out, ready to ambush a passerby. In ancient times, robbers would mimic hunters by digging pits then camouflaging them to trap to prey. The wise teacher implores his son to listen to him because the immoral woman is like this kind of robber, and she will send him down to a deep pit-which is also a metaphor for the grace. Though the son should be able to discern the trap, he does not always see it. Sexual sin is a thief that wants to steal all of God’s blessings: family, reputation and life. The adulterous woman causes a man to betray his family and his God. The wise teacher wants his readers to be vigilant to avoid that trap. Foolishness is a predator seeking to destroy. The wise teacher in effect says, “Don’t get ambushed; listen to wisdom.”
