But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 1 John 1:7
“Walk in the light” means to believe and accept God’s truth as revealed in his Word and to make an earnest and sustained effort, with his help, live by God’s truth in words and actions. The expression, “the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin,” refers to the ongoing work of sanctification (spiritual and moral purification, refinement, growth, development, maturity and preparation for God’s purposes) within the lives of those who follow Christ. Through the inner presence of his Holy Spirit, God provides continual cleansing for a believers unknown and unintentional sins. John is probably not thinking here of deliberate defiance against God and his standard, since he speaks of walking in the light. This continual purifying allows us to have intimate companionship with God.
