The LORD builds up Jerusalem;
he gathers the exiles of Israel.
He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.
He determines the number of the stars
and calls them each by name.
Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
his understanding has no limit.
The LORD sustains the humble
but casts the wicked to the ground. Psalm 147:2-6
David built Jerusalem after taking it from the Jebusites (2 Samuel 5:6-9). But the Babylonians destroyed the city and carried the Israelites into exile in 586 BC (2 Kings 25). God later sent Ezra and Nehemiah to rebuild the temple and city, but only God could gather the people and heal their wounds. Some may have doubted God’s ability to restore them all, but if God numbers and names the stars, he certainly knows each child of Abraham, whose descendants were as numerous as the stars. Isaiah ties these ideas together and urges the Israelites not to think that God does not see their plight (Isaiah 40:26-27). God is sovereign, and his wisdom has no bounds. He will help the humble and overthrow evil.
