Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD,
and he will reward them for what they have done. Proverbs 19:17
Graciously giving to help the poor is a way of serving the Lord. He will reward those who do this. But that still does not answer the question of why does God so closely identify with the poor?
One reason is God’s passion for justice; so often the poor are victims of injustice and oppression. Another reason is his love for those he created. Since the poor do not have access to the advantages of the world, many consider them unlovable. But they still bear the image of God. Who would look out for the poor if not God? The poor also often exhibit the values God is looking for: a spirit of brokenness, trust and complete dependence upon him.
