Wait for the LORD;
be strong and take heart
and wait for the LORD. Psalm 27:14
A Hymn of Confidence
This psalm has two divisions which differ so drastically in theme and mood that some have believed they are two separate psalms brought together as one. The first division (vv. 1-6) is a joyful hymn of bold confidence in God. God is a source of light in the darkness of despair or trouble or conflict (v. 1). David longs to dwell in the presence of such a gracious God (v. 4).
The second division is a frantic plea for help (vv. 7-14). The poet (David) here is threatened by his enemies and looks to God for deliverance. In the last two verses he allows his faith in God to encourage his soul. And it is that last verse that we are going to be focusing on today.
What does it mean to wait for the Lord?
Waiting for the Lord suggests trust in God’s goodness and timing. God sees things differently than we do, so answers to prayer may not always come in the way we want or as quickly as we want. David waited on God-he depended on him alone for his needs and looked expectantly to him. David also discovered the value of patience; he trusted God to send the answer when-and only when-the time was right.
