Verse of the Day 10-12-22

“Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” Luke 12:35-40

Watchfulness and Being Ready

Concerning the Lord’s return for his people, the New Testament church believed it was near and could happen at any time. This was the attitude Jesus desired because it kept his people prepared and living right. From the time Jesus left the earth to the present, he calls all of his followers to be spiritually ready at all times as they wait for his return, and we see three important truths in this passage.

1. We as Jesus’ followers must be so attached to him as our greatest love and treasure that our deepest hope and longing is for his return (vv. 35-37).
2. We must be spiritually dressed, that is living with Christ’s character traits and serving his purposes, and ready as we wait for the uncertain time of Christ’s coming (vv. 38 and 40).
3. Christ could come at any time (v. 38), so we must be eating and looking for Christ himself, not for a series of signs or end-time events that might begin at any time.

The whole point of this passage is simply this: Those who serve God must always be spiritually ready and obedient-following the instructions of his Word-because the Lord will come at an uncertain time.
