Verse of the Day 10-16-22

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7

These two verses are about a very touchy subject in today’s society, just as they were about a touchy subject in the first century AD, and that subject is giving. Paul starts off with a farming analogy. He tells us that in the manner that we sow we will reap. In other words Paul starts off by telling us that the key to living a blessed life is to live open handed.

Paul closes these two verses by telling us that we are not to give because we have been forced to give but because we have chosen to give. And why do we choose to give? Because as true follower of Christ we realize that everything we have has been given to us by God and therefore does not really belong to us. And it is for this reason that we give cheerfully and choose to live opened handed.

But what does it mean to be a “cheerful” giver. The word that Paul used in Greek that we translate here as “cheerful” does not refer to loud and uncontrolled expressions of leaping and laughter. Rather, it means we get to experience an overwhelming sense of inner joy, gladness and fulfillment that goes along with sincere and generous giving. So let’s all go out and live opened handed lives not for the reward that we will get and not because we are required to, but because of the incredible gifts that we each received from God.
