The righteous person may have many troubles,
but the LORD delivers him from them all. Psalm 34:19
Throughout the Bible God promises blessing and success for those who obey his laws. Yet alongside these promises is the reality that righteous people “may have many troubles.” There are two things that we need to understand about these promises and the troubles that will come.
- Believing in God and living right will not guarantee material gain or keep us from trouble and suffering in this life. Instead, commitment to God often brings persecution and spiritual testing. God has determined that we must go through many hardships to enter his kingdom. These difficulties are not a matter of punishment or a way for one to earn a place in God’s kingdom. They are tools for learning and for growing. They are the means to make us stronger emotionally and spiritually.
- Our suffering must be balanced by the knowledge that God desires to rescue us out of all our troubles. When his purpose for allowing the difficulties is accomplished, he then rescues us either by direct supernatural action in this life (Hebrews 11:33-35) or by victorious death that takes us into eternal life with him (Hebrews 11:35-37).
