Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Peter 1:3-5
These three verses give us hope in three specific ways: our salvation, our inheritance as children of God and the fact that nothing can take away either your salvation or your inheritance.
- Salvation is a new birth into a living hope, which is a positive exception about the future. When you were born the first time, it was into a dead hope. You were born to die. But, through the resurrection of Jesus, there is a better future on the horizon. Because his resurrection guarantees your own.
- “Inheritance” includes our rewards for faithfulness and fidelity to the King and his kingdom. Have you ever made a hotel reservation only to discover that the hotel had no record of it when you show up to check in? Thankful that will not happen with this reservation because it is “kept in heaven,” where no one can take it, lose it, or hack it out of God’s heavenly computer.
- If you are truly born again, you are not going anywhere-not because of your power to hold on to God, but because God has an omnipotent grip on you.
