Jesus: The Name Says It All
She will give birth to a Son; and you shall name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21 NASB)
The name “Jesus” is the Greek form of the Hebrew name “Yeshua” (Joshua in English), meaning “Yaweh (the Lord and the formal name for God in Hebrew) saves.” This very name describes exactly the future mission of Mary’s son and is the early promise of the Gospel, which is the “Good News” of spiritual salvation through Jesus.
As the Savior, Jesus “will save His people from their sins,” which is our spiritual rebellion and offenses against God. Sin is the greatest enemy of the human race because it separates humankind from God and is present to destroy every eternal soul and every life. However, Jesus broke the power of sin by sacrificing his own sinless life to pay the full penalty for our offenses against God. So that those who accept God’s forgiveness and yield their lives to Jesus are spiritually transformed through the power of the Holy Spirit, which is the same Spirit through which Jesus was conceived. All those who accept this gift that is offered to them, not because they have earned but because it is freely offered to them by God through his loving grace, are spiritually “saved,” which simply means rescued and set free from the guilt and slavery of sin (John 8:31-36; Acts 26:18; Romans 6 and 8:1-16).
As you prepare to celebrate Christmas tomorrow do not forget the real reason for this season. It is not all about the gifts that are giving and the gifts you will receive. But it is about the greatest gift that you will ever possibly receive, Son of God, who willingly stepped down out of heaven to be born in the most humble of circumstances. Who lived among mankind but yet lived a sinless life, the only “man” to ever have lived a sinless, all so that he could pay the penalty that you cannot pay, thus making salvation available to ALL who will accept it.
